Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity is hosting their annual Women Build in August, which is an event focused on empowering women in their communities by building affordable housing.
Many of our partner families have a single, female head-of-household, so it is important that we recognize the unique challenges that this demographic faces. In the US, 80% of single-parent families are headed by a female, and in Vermont, 32% of female-headed households with children live below the poverty level.
“Women Build is an empowering experience, and I am excited to work with these dedicated volunteers,” said Caitlyn Conibear, Volunteer Manager at Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity. “This is an amazing opportunity for members of our community to come together and experience the power of working as a team to build affordable housing right here in Northwest Vermont.”
This year, Women Build will take place at two sites: one at the site of a duplex in the New North End of Burlington and one at the site of a triplex Winooski.
The event is not about excluding men; rather, it is about empowering women in a traditionally male-dominated space. Members of all gender identities are encouraged and welcome to participate.
